The Valley sits in Los Angeles County, but it does not run on a single rulebook. Many neighborhoods belong to the City of Los Angeles, while five cities make their own rules; two of them, Burbank and Glendale, have separate pages. Here is what the rules mean for our truck and crew.

Where the truck can park in Los Angeles neighborhoods

Valley neighborhoods of Los Angeles, from Sherman Oaks and Encino to Van Nuys and Woodland Hills, fall under LAMC Sec. 80.69(b). It keeps commercial vehicles, and any motor vehicle over 22 feet long, from parking on a public street where most buildings on the block are residential, and caps commercial parking at three hours on other public streets.

The code does let a vehicle stay while it loads or unloads property, when the extra time is necessary and reasonable. We use that exception for the loading itself, not for parking between jobs. Tell us about the curb at both ends and the distance from truck to door, and we will size the crew to that carry.

Van Nuys Boulevard needs one more check. Metro is building the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail along it, 11 stations over 6.7 miles, and some parking on the boulevard will be removed. Work with phased lane changes and K-rail runs until an estimated 2031, so we read Metro's closure list before setting a start time there.

Hidden Hills gates and building rules

Hidden Hills is a private community whose Association owns the roads, gates and guard houses, with officers at three gatehouses around the clock; its website lists the Round Meadow, Burbank and Long Valley gates. Under its Gate Operations Manual, amended through August 2020 and still posted as current, every visitor shows government photo ID, and a guest missing from the admit list waits until the officer reaches the resident.

The manual never names movers, yet it admits “tradespeople” hired to work on a home only from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, with no Sunday or holiday entry. Large commercial vehicles are barred on Saturdays, and on school days the Round Meadow Gate is closed to tradespeople until 9 a.m. We schedule truck moves there on weekdays and can send the crew names ahead for your list.

Condo boards and apartment managers elsewhere in the Valley may set their own move hours and elevator rules, so we ask you for them before the date. A certificate of insurance, when a building requires one, is $50 per building, listed with our rates on the pricing page.

Warner Center, Calabasas and the neighborhoods between

The Valley's population quintupled between 1945 and 1960, and its Los Angeles neighborhoods now run from North Hollywood and Panorama City to Granada Hills and Canoga Park. In any of them, our residential moving crews protect floors and doorways and take apart furniture that will not clear a door.

Calabasas, a separate city in the southwest of the Valley, sits between the foothills of the Santa Monica and Santa Susana mountains, and its residential communities include Mulwood. For a foothill address, we ask for a photo of the driveway and the walk from the street, since that sets the crew size.

Warner Center, in the Woodland Hills and Canoga Park area, is a planned mixed-use regional center bounded by the Ventura Freeway on the south, De Soto Avenue on the east and Topanga Canyon Boulevard on the west. Its growth follows the Warner Center 2035 Specific Plan. For a move there, we confirm loading space and elevator times with the building in advance.

Freeways, canyon roads and summer heat

Freeways serving the Valley include I-405, US-101, SR-118, SR-170, SR-134, I-210 and I-5. The Ventura Freeway runs east to west through the Valley and serves Calabasas, while I-405 climbs through the Sepulveda Pass to West Los Angeles with heavy, steady traffic. When it stalls, Sepulveda Boulevard and canyon roads such as Laurel Canyon and Beverly Glen, which begins at Ventura Boulevard, serve as alternates.

Woodland Hills hit 121°F on Sept. 6, 2020, which the National Weather Service called the highest official temperature ever recorded in Los Angeles County. On Aug. 7, 2026, the County named the West and East Valley as Heat Advisory zones for the next two days. On days like those, we start early, keep water on the truck and load candles, vinyl records and electronics last.

Long-distance moves out of the Valley

Northbound, I-405 crosses SR-118 and ends at I-5 inside the Valley, and I-5 then climbs the Grapevine through Tejon Pass. A Caltrans flyer (revised 2019) says snow and ice close that stretch three to five times between October and April in an average year, with detours via SR-58, SR-166, or SR-46 and SR-41 to US-101 depending on the closure phase; one phase has no detour.
