Cypress incorporated in 1956 as Dairy City and took its current name the following year. As the dairies moved on, the land filled with single-family neighborhoods, most of them built in the 1960s and 1970s, and later with townhome and condo communities. Cypress College is here, and so is the Los Alamitos Race Course, which sits inside Cypress city limits despite its name and mailing address.

Townhome associations often set moving hours and limit where a truck can park, and families tend to move in summer between school years. No freeway runs through Cypress: trucks reach the 91, the 22 and the 405 via Valley View Street, and the 605 via Carson Street and Lincoln Avenue, so the route out of town is part of the time plan.
