Cerritos began as Dairy Valley, a town of dairy farms that incorporated in 1956 and took the name Cerritos in 1967, as the farms gave way to planned neighborhoods built mostly between the late 1960s and the 1970s. Today about four in five homes are single-family houses, and the city is known for its parks, Whitney High School and regional destinations: Los Cerritos Center, the Cerritos Auto Square and the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. The Cerritos Library, clad in titanium, is one of its most photographed buildings.
