Fountain Valley incorporated in 1957. Its name comes from the artesian water that once kept this ground so wet that it was farmland long before it was suburbs. When the fields gave way to housing, neighborhoods of single-story and two-story homes filled the city, many of them in the 1960s and 1970s, with townhome communities and business parks added along the main roads. Near its center lies Mile Square Regional Park, roughly a square mile of fishing lakes, sports fields and two golf courses.

Garages tend to be full, cul-de-sacs leave limited room for a large truck, and townhome associations may set moving hours or limit where a truck can stand.
