Moving in Malibu, Road by Road
Housing points the same way. In SCAG's 2021 data, about two-thirds of Malibu's homes were detached single-family houses and close to three in four households owned their home, so we plan most jobs here as whole-house moves, with crew size and truck space to match.
Recovery from the Palisades Fire is part of moving here as well. The City announced PCH's reopening to public traffic for May 23, 2025, Caltrans repair work was still under way in August 2026, and the City describes its burn-scar areas as sensitive and undergoing recovery. Parking, gates, routes and moves tied to rebuilding are covered in more detail further down this page.

How Malibu Movers Plan Around PCH, Gates and Rebuilds
Parking on PCH and Near the Beaches
Pacific Coast Highway is under State jurisdiction, yet parking along it is enforced by the City: Malibu's parking officers apply the Malibu Municipal Code, the LA County Code and the California Vehicle Code, working with the Sheriff's Malibu/Lost Hills Station. Their FAQ says officers also apply the Oversized Vehicle Ordinance (Municipal Code ch. 10.18) together with overnight parking restrictions. We never assume a moving truck is exempt from either rule, so it stops only where parking is legal that day and only for as long as loading takes.
According to the City's permits page, an Encroachment Permit is required for use of the public right of way; the page does not say how that applies to a truck parked for a few hours. If the street is the only workable spot, check with the City well before the date. We'll tell you how long a stretch of curb the truck and its ramp need and which side of the entrance keeps the carry short.
Near the water, weekends are the pinch point. The City names the beaches, Point Dume, Cliffside, Winding Way and the burn-scar areas as high-traffic, high-impact zones that see illegal parking, especially on weekends and holidays. For homes in those areas we suggest a weekday move.
Gates, HOAs and Insurance Certificates
Serra Retreat is a gated community, and Malibu Colony, on Malibu Road, has gates of its own; we have not found published move rules for either. Before we set a time, ask your HOA or manager which hours moves are allowed, what size truck may enter and whether the crew must be registered at the gate. If the association asks for a certificate of insurance, we issue one for $50 per building (see our rates), so send the certificate-holder wording a few days ahead.
Houses, Mobile Homes and Rebuilding Lots
SCAG's housing data (updated April 2021, before the Palisades Fire) counted 6,441 homes in Malibu: 67.9% detached single-family houses, 8.3% attached, 11.8% in buildings of five or more units and 8.4% mobile homes. For a house with three or more bedrooms we typically send four to six movers; our residential moving page explains how floors, walls and doorways are protected. In a park such as Paradise Cove Mobile Home Park, at 28128 Pacific Coast Highway, check with management where the truck may stop.
After the Palisades Fire, the City permits temporary housing on affected lots: mobile homes, trailers, RVs or other self-contained units, no more than two and no more than 1,000 square feet combined. A unit can go in after debris removal is complete, a City-registered practitioner has verified the septic system and a limited geotechnical report is provided. Only the owners or tenants living on the property at the time of the fire, or their families, may occupy it.
The permit runs four years from planning approval and can be renewed one year at a time, up to six, while the rebuild has a building permit and inspections are under way. The unit has to be removed before the new house receives final approval, unless it is converted into a permitted permanent structure. When that point nears, we move your things from the temporary unit into the finished home, so it is empty before it has to go.
PCH, Canyon Roads and Work Zones
Three links carry our trucks to and from Malibu. Southbound, PCH runs to Santa Monica, where the McClure Tunnel connects it to the western end of I-10; Sunset Boulevard, which ends at PCH in Pacific Palisades, has an interchange with I-405 in Brentwood. Inland, Malibu Canyon Road becomes Las Virgenes Road and crosses the Santa Monica Mountains to US-101 in Calabasas.
Fire repair work adds temporary limits. A City notice for August 2-9, 2026 listed a 25 mph limit on PCH from Sunset Boulevard to Carbon Beach Terrace, weekday lane closures (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) between Las Flores Canyon Road and Sunset for creek, drainage and slope repairs, and a warning that fines may be doubled in construction zones. On the stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard that Caltrans reopened in January 2026, the same notice listed 15 mph through the work zone.
Because notices like that cover a single week, we check the current ones shortly before your date and pick the approach and start time to match. Crew time is billed by the hour, so we would rather route around a closure than sit in it. Summer weekends bring the peak in beach parking demand along PCH, the level the City's PCH Parking Study used for its recommendations.
Leaving Malibu for Another State
For a move out of California, our long-distance moving service works from a binding estimate built on distance, weight and the services you pick. Minutes of a May 2024 City Planning Commission meeting note an existing PCH prohibition on trucks with more than three axles that extends as far as Decker Canyon, so we choose the truck and the first miles of the route together. Shorter trips, to Pacific Palisades or Santa Monica for instance, stay hourly; the rest of the county is on our Los Angeles County page.
