In Covenant Hills, the gated community within Ladera Ranch, contractors are let in through the Antonio gate with a valid Construction Pass, issued at the Avendale Village Clubhouse front office, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. LARMAC's rules count loading or unloading furnishings in front of a home as contractor work, and contractors still inside after those hours are escorted off the property, so there the piano is handled first.

In Laguna Woods, the Village's checklist asks residents to secure day passes for movers two weeks ahead and to arrange free elevator pads through Resident Services at the same time. Residents answer for damage their movers cause, so the crew pads the elevator and keeps the dolly off lawns and sprinklers.

Coastal, Foothill and Canyon Homes

According to the County's Housing Element, most unincorporated land in Orange County lies in its coastal and foothill areas, and single-family detached homes made up 75.2% of unincorporated housing units in 2020, against 50.1% countywide. Inside Laguna Woods Village, residents are asked to remind their movers that the posted speed limit is 25 mph, and 10 or 15 mph in cul-de-sacs. The driver keeps to it, and the slow final stretch is built into the plan.

What Piano Moving in Orange County Costs by the Hour

A piano job is not sold as a separate product. It is an hourly move with four movers and a truck, at $209 an hour from Monday to Thursday or $225 an hour from Friday to Sunday, and the piano adds a single $200 charge listed on our moving rates page. The piano can be the only item on the truck or one piece of a full house.

Take a piano-only job on a Tuesday: the crew-of-four rate runs for at least three hours, and the $200 charge sits on top. The same job on a Saturday uses the $225 rate. Your quote names the crew size and the rate, so there is nothing to work out on the day.

The minimum is three hours, or four when the job starts more than 30 miles from the service area. Hours past the eighth are billed at one and a half times the standard rate. Stairs, fuel and equipment carry no separate fee, so a flight of steps shows up as time rather than as its own line on the bill.

Seniors, returning customers and military personnel get 5% off. Moves over long distances are priced differently: long-distance moving runs on a binding estimate drawn from the distance, the weight of the shipment and the services you add, not on an hourly bill.

A piano packs a lot of weight into an awkward shape, and the weight is not spread evenly. Two people can carry most furniture; a piano needs enough hands that someone is always free to steady it, open the next door or call out a threshold. Disassembly and reassembly are included too. On grands and baby grands, parts such as the legs and the pedal lyre usually come off for the trip, and the crew puts them back on once the piano is inside the new room.

We move grands, baby grands and uprights, and the type decides much of the plan: an upright travels standing, while a grand needs more room to turn and more parts removed. Stairs are the hardest part of most piano moves, so they get the most planning. Before lifting, the crew walks the full route from the piano to the truck, counts the steps, checks each landing and turn, and looks for anything that could catch a corner: a railing, a light fixture, a door that does not open fully.

On steps the crew moves the piano one step at a time, with movers positioned below it to take the weight. Porch steps at a detached house, a split-level entry or a short flight down to a sunken living room each add minutes, which is why we ask about them up front instead of finding them on the day.

Measurements you send in advance show whether the widest part of the piano clears the narrowest door. If it is close, we plan the angle of approach before the day, not in the doorway.

Getting the House Ready Before the Crew Arrives

A little preparation keeps the hourly bill down. Most of it takes one evening:

• Clear the lid and top of the piano of photos, lamps, plants and sheet music.
• Close the keyboard cover and empty the bench.
• Measure the narrowest door, hallway and stair turn on the way out, and at the new home if you can get in.
• Move rugs, plants and small tables out of the path between the piano and the front door.
• Choose the exact spot for the piano in the new room and keep it clear.
• Have gate passes, elevator reservations and any certificate of insurance ready before moving day.

After Delivery: Placement and Tuning
