Hold the elevator from the start of the arrival window until the piano is out. The crew hangs blankets inside the car and pads the corners and door frames the piano passes.

Newport Boulevard, Coast Highway and the Hourly Clock

The Costa Mesa Freeway (SR-55) stops being a freeway at 19th Street in Costa Mesa. South of there it continues as Newport Boulevard: a regular street through a commercial part of Costa Mesa to 17th Street, then a short four-lane expressway with an interchange at Coast Highway, ending at Via Lido in Newport Beach.

When a piano rides between your two addresses along that stretch, the street pace counts on the hourly clock, so we set start times with that drive in mind. Inside our service area the clock runs for at least 3 hours; a move starting 30 or more miles outside it has a 4-hour minimum.

Pianos don't have a price list of their own. The instrument rides on an hourly job, and its crew is always four movers with a truck: $209 per hour on Mondays through Thursdays, $225 per hour on Fridays through Sundays. Short jobs still pay for the minimum: 3 hours inside our service area, or 4 when the move starts 30 or more miles outside it. Any time beyond 8 hours costs 1.5 times the usual rate. Blankets, stretch wrap and the removal and refitting of a grand's legs are covered by the hourly price, and the bill shows no fuel surcharge, equipment fee or stair fee.

A 5% discount applies to seniors, military members and repeat customers. Two-mover crews have a lower hourly rate, but a piano always goes with four, so that rate doesn't apply to this work.

Most of the preparation is about the path, not the piano. A few days out, walk from the instrument to the street and count the steps, the landings and the tight corners, then do the same walk at the new address.

• Look up the sweeping day for both addresses on the city's map and send it to us with your booking.
• In a guard-gated community, ask the gatehouse or the HOA what a moving company needs, and add the crew once we confirm the window.
• In a Newport Center tower, ask management whether the building has a service elevator, reserve it, and check whether they need our certificate of insurance.
• Take everything off the lid, from photos to lamps, and clear out the bench.

Unloading is the same work in reverse. The piano is set exactly where you marked, a grand is stood back on its legs with the pedal assembly refitted, and the blankets leave with the crew after a last look around with you. We move pianos but don't tune them; a technician can do that once the instrument has settled into its new room.
