Most people searching for same-day movers in Los Angeles are dealing with a plan that fell apart: a lease that ended early, a closing that moved up, a mover who never showed. If you need to move today: what to check in Los Angeles

• Posted signs. LADOT handles temporary No Parking signs, and UCLA Housing puts the lead time at five working days, so plan on a driveway, a loading area or legal curb.
• Sweeping day. Read the sweeping sign on both blocks; vehicles in the restricted area on sweeping day get cited.
• Tower access. In Bunker Hill high-rises such as Promenade Towers, ask management about the elevator and loading entrance first.
• Rush hours. Metro's I-10 ExpressLanes peak runs 5 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
• Late finish. On streets signed under LAMC 80.69.4, trucks over 22 feet long or 7 feet tall can't park from 2 to 6 a.m.

Parking and Permits When There's No Time for Signs

Reserving street space for a moving truck in the City of LA goes through LADOT, whose Special Traffic Control Division takes requests for temporary No Parking signs. UCLA Housing's move-in guide tells residents to reach LADOT five working days before the move date, so signs are out of reach for a job booked this morning.

The crew works with the curb as it is. Tell us what each address has, whether a driveway, a building loading area, a side street or open curb. The truck takes the closest legal spot, and a longer carry just adds time on an hourly job.

HOA, Condo and Building Rules on Short Notice

Condo associations and apartment managers set their own move rules, and a same-day booking leaves hours, not days, to meet them. Before the crew is sent, call management with three questions: can the service elevator be held for you today, which entrance and loading area do movers use, and is a certificate of insurance required?

A COI costs $50 per building on our price list, so forward management's requirements the moment you have them. Inside, furniture is wrapped in moving blankets and stretch wrap, both part of the hourly rate, before it enters a shared hallway or elevator.

Downtown Towers and Swept Residential Streets

Promenade Towers, finished in 1985, is one of the high-rise apartment complexes on Bunker Hill in Downtown LA, and Museum Tower at 225 S. Olive St. is another of the neighborhood's residential buildings. In a tower, elevator trips set the pace, so the crew stages wrapped pieces and boxes by the elevator and fills every ride.

Away from downtown, the curb is the constraint. More than 4,700 curb miles in the City of LA are posted for street sweeping, each route swept every other week, in either the 1st and 3rd or the 2nd and 4th week of the month. The crew reads the sign before parking.

Rush Hours, Minimums and a Late Finish

Metro sets peak hours on the I-10 ExpressLanes at weekdays 5 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., when even two-person carpools pay a toll. If your start time is flexible, keep the drive between addresses outside those windows.

Billing follows the usual rules: a three-hour minimum, four hours when an address is 30 or more miles from the service area, and 1.5 times the rate after eight hours. Late starts meet one more limit: where LAMC 80.69.4 signs are posted, vehicles over 22 feet long or over 7 feet tall may not park from 2 to 6 a.m. If a job looks too big to finish tonight, we would rather say so on the phone.

What Decides Whether We Can Come Today

A same-day request is not a separate service with its own crews. It is a regular hourly move fitted into a day that is already partly booked, so the answer depends on a few things we can check in minutes.

• When you call. A morning call leaves room to fit a full job before evening.
• Crew size. A studio or one-bedroom usually needs two or three movers, homes with three or more bedrooms take four to six, and a big crew is harder to free up on short notice.
• Access. Stairs, elevators, long carries and building rules all add time, and some of them need more notice than a same-day booking gives.
• Distance. An address 30 or more miles from the service area raises the minimum from three hours to four.

If today can't work, we will tell you which of these is the blocker. Sometimes the fix is on your side, such as clearing the elevator with management; sometimes the honest answer is the next opening in the schedule.

How a Same-Day Move Is Priced

Nothing changes on the price side when you book the same day. Monday through Thursday, a truck with two movers costs $129 an hour, with three movers $169, and with four movers $209; Friday through Sunday those rates are $145, $185 and $225, and an extra mover adds $40 an hour. The minimum is three hours, so the smallest weekday job comes to $387. There is no separate fuel surcharge, equipment fee, or stair fee, and moving blankets, stretch wrap, tape and furniture disassembly are included. After eight hours on one job, the rate becomes 1.5 times the standard one, and seniors, returning customers and military personnel get 5% off.

What to Tell Us on the Phone

A quick, accurate description is what lets us send the right crew the first time. Have these ready when you call:

• Both addresses, with unit numbers and any gate or lobby instructions.
• The size of the home and the biggest pieces, such as sectionals, armoires, bed frames and dressers.
• Stairs, elevators and where the truck can stop at each end.
• Anything unusual. A piano goes with a four-mover crew and a $200 piano charge on top of the hourly rate (how we move pianos in Los Angeles), and extra heavy items such as a pool table add $150 (moving a pool table).
• Whether either building needs a certificate of insurance.

Using the Hours Before the Truck Arrives

On a same-day move, the time before the crew shows up is the only time nobody is billing for. Spend it on the tasks that would otherwise happen at the hourly rate.

1. Box the loose small things first: books, dishes, bathroom shelves, closet shelves. If you are short on boxes, we sell them per piece, from a $1.25 book box and a $3.50 dish pack to small, medium and large boxes at $4, $5 and $6.
2. Leave the furniture assembled. Taking beds and tables apart is part of the crew's work, so your time is better spent elsewhere.
3. Clear a path from each room to the door, and from the door to where the truck will stop.
4. Set aside what travels with you: documents, keys, medication, chargers, jewelry and anything irreplaceable.
5. Photograph the back of the TV and computer before unplugging them, so reconnecting takes minutes.
