Furniture Movers in Los Angeles

Our Los Angeles furniture movers show up with a truck, blankets and tools for jobs smaller than a whole household: a sectional from a private seller, a bedroom set going to a new apartment, a desk and shelves leaving a home office. The work follows the hourly terms of our local moving service rather than the binding estimate behind long-distance moves. Here is the honest part: we are not the right call for every item. Every job is a crew with a truck, billed by the hour with a three-hour minimum, so the smallest weekday booking comes to $387, and one light chair is cheaper to move some other way.

That minimum buys time, and time is what a bigger job needs. Beds come apart and go back together, sofas are wrapped before they meet a door frame, and the crew brings the straps and dollies. Several pieces, stairs, or a building that asks for insurance paperwork: that is the kind of work a crew is for.

Parking and loading at the curb

Inside the city of Los Angeles, curb color sets the rules. A yellow curb is an LADOT commercial loading zone: commercial plates only, only while freight is actively loaded or unloaded, up to 30 minutes, Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. unless signs say otherwise. White curbs allow five-minute passenger stops, around the clock unless posted.

Thirty minutes is short when a sectional has to be unbolted, so the crew doesn't plan around a yellow zone or load at a white one. Tell us what the curb looks like at both addresses, and we'll say which stretch to keep clear.

Condo, apartment and campus housing rules

Some properties set rules for the truck itself. UCLA Housing's move-in rules for its University Apartments send commercial moving vans, and any vehicle over 14 feet long or with more than two axles, to street parking. Our truck is a commercial moving van, so a job there is planned as a carry from the curb.

Condo and apartment managers elsewhere may ask for a certificate of insurance, which costs $50 per building, or want the elevator and loading area booked for a set window. Send us the move-in sheet if the building has one, and the crew will work to its hours.

Park La Brea and soft-story apartment buildings

Park La Brea on W. 3rd Street, which Metropolitan Life began building in 1941, mixes high-rise towers added around 1950 with low-rise garden buildings. We ask which one the piece is in, since the two mean different routes and timing.

LADBS, the city's building department, runs a mandatory soft-story retrofit program for wood-frame buildings from pre-1978 codes with parking or similar open space on the ground floor and at least one story above; residential buildings with three or fewer units are excluded. If your unit sits over that parking, each piece goes up or down at least one level, and the crew measures the tightest turn first.

Rush hours, peak-hour lanes and the clock

Some LA streets still have peak-hour travel lanes, where parked cars must be gone for rush hour every weekday. At the City Council's direction, LADOT is removing them on lower-volume streets and restoring full-time parking, so the crew checks the posted hours at each address.

Where a lane is still active, loading goes between the peaks, because a truck waiting for the curb to open is time on your hourly bill. The minimum is three hours, or four when a job starts more than 30 miles from our service area.

A Crew With a Truck, or an App With a Helper?

A lot of people looking for furniture movers in Los Angeles have a single item in mind: a couch from a listing, a dresser for a new bedroom. On-demand apps that send one or two helpers answer that need, and for a light piece on the ground floor they may well cost less than our minimum.

A Green Moving booking works another way. It's a crew with a truck, paid by the hour with a three-hour minimum, so it earns its cost when the job has some weight to it. A crew tends to be the better fit when:

• there are several large pieces, or a full room's worth;
• a bed, desk or table has to come apart to clear a door;
• there are stairs at either end, or a long walk from the curb;
• the building asks for a certificate of insurance or a reserved elevator;
• the pieces deserve blankets and wrap for the whole trip.

A simple test helps. If doing it yourself would mean renting a truck and calling two friends, the job is crew-sized; if it fits in a hatchback, it probably isn't.

How the Hourly Bill Adds Up

The rate depends on crew size and the day of the week. Two movers with a truck cost $129 an hour Monday through Thursday and $145 Friday through Sunday; three movers cost $169 and $185, and four cost $209 and $225. Every job carries a three-hour minimum, which is how the smallest weekday booking lands at $387. A job starting more than 30 miles from our service area has a four-hour minimum, and time past eight hours in one day is billed at one and a half times the rate, rarely a factor when the load is furniture alone.

Time is what moves the total, and it comes from a few places: the distance between addresses, the flights of stairs, the walk from the truck and the number of pieces that need tools. None of those is billed as a separate fee, since there is no fuel surcharge, equipment fee or stair fee.

A few add-ons are fixed. Extra heavy items add $150 each, crating a glass tabletop runs $75 to $200, and a certificate of insurance is $50 per building; the list of surcharges shows every one in one place.

What the Hourly Rate Already Covers

Disassembly and reassembly are part of the job, not an upgrade. Bed frames, dining tables with removable legs, desks and sectionals that unbolt are taken apart where they stand, and the screws and brackets ride in a labeled bag with the piece they belong to.

Wrapping is included as well. Upholstery goes into blankets and shrink wrap, wood surfaces are padded before anything is taped, and mirrors or glass that aren't crated travel padded and upright. Basic coverage is part of the rate, too.

Before the first piece moves, floors and door frames are covered at both ends. At the new address, each item goes to the room you name and the spot you point to, not just inside the front door.

Boxes sit outside the rate. If drawer contents or a few shelves of books need packing, boxes are sold by the piece: a book box is $1.25 and a large box $6.

Getting Furniture Ready Before the Crew Arrives

An hourly job rewards a little preparation the night before. Here is what helps most on a furniture-only booking:

• Take heavy or breakable things out of drawers so the piece can be carried, not dragged.
• Strip the beds and set the bedding aside in a bag.
• Measure doorways, hallways and the elevator at the new place against your longest piece.
• Clear a path from each room to the door, and move cars that block the driveway.
• Get the building's move rules, insurance requirements and elevator window in writing.
• Decide where each piece goes; a sticky note on the wall of each room saves a round of questions.

Each of these trims minutes, and on an hourly job, minutes are the bill. If something on the list is out of reach, say so when the crew calls before arrival, and they'll plan for it.

Store Pickups, Hand-Me-Downs and Apartment Merges

Plenty of furniture jobs aren't a household move at all. Someone bought a sectional from a seller across town, a parent is passing down a dining set, or two apartments are merging and only the better pieces are going. The crew handles each the same way: wrap at pickup, strap in the truck, carry in and set up.

For a pickup from a private seller, send the address, the floor and the seller's contact, and confirm the measurements with them before the day. Check that the piece will clear your own doorway, too, because a sofa that can't make the turn into a hallway costs time at both ends. Settle payment with the seller before the crew arrives, so nobody waits on the clock while it gets sorted out.

When Furniture Leaves Los Angeles

Within Los Angeles and Orange County, the hourly model applies, including runs between the two counties. A dresser going from Silver Lake to Irvine is still billed by the hour; a bedroom set going to Phoenix is not.
