The job is planned from the piano outward: the room it stands in, the doorways, the entry steps and finally the curb.

Torrance has two rules that shape how a moving truck reaches your door. Its traffic code keeps commercial vehicles over 8,000 lb off City streets except where the truck-route article allows them, and it restricts where oversized vehicles may park or stand. Before the date is fixed, we work out which streets lead to your block and where the truck can stop nearest your entry.

The bill has two parts. The four-mover rate is $209 an hour Monday through Thursday and $225 Friday through Sunday, and a single $200 piano charge is added from our price list. Blankets, stretch wrap and securing the piano in the truck come with the crew.

Parking: oversized vehicles and the one-hour limit

Torrance bans parking or leaving standing an oversized vehicle, one longer than 20 feet, wider than 7 feet or taller than 8 feet, on public streets in the City (Municipal Code 61.12.010–61.12.020). Exceptions (61.12.030) include commercial vehicles picking up or delivering goods or serving a residence. Section 61.6.19 adds a one-hour parking limit on City roadways for any vehicle over 8,000 lb with its load.

So the curb is a work zone: the truck arrives with the crew and leaves once the load is secured. Owners may park their own oversized vehicle outside their home on 24-hour City permits, three in a row at most; if yours is out front, move it before the arrival window.

Condos and apartment buildings

A third of Torrance homes, 33.1%, are in buildings of five or more units, against 27.3% across the SCAG region. From 2000 to 2020 the city gained 2,094 multifamily units and 578 single-family ones, and renters occupied 44.7% of households.

In those buildings the association or the management office sets the rules for a move. Ask for the sheet when you book and send it to us, because reserved elevator times, allowed move hours and insurance paperwork all shape the plan for the day. A certificate of insurance is $50 per building, so a move between two managed buildings can need two.

Hollywood Riviera, Seaside and West Torrance

The City Council adopted the Hillside Overlay in 1977 to set standards for certain hillside and coastal development. Its zone takes in part of the Hollywood Riviera and parts of the Seaside, Hillside and West Torrance areas, protecting neighbors' views, light, air and privacy: building above one story or past the size limits needs a Precise Plan, and exceptions go to the Planning Commission.

A zoning map doesn't show how steep a walkway is. For an overlay address, the crew asks about the grade and the steps from the street before the day, and pads door frames and railings with blankets during the carry.

Truck routes, the 405 and the hourly clock

Under the truck-route article (61.9.1), commercial vehicles over 8,000 lb gross weight may use City streets only as it provides. Section 61.9.3(d) lets such a truck take a direct route from an unrestricted street to a restricted one to pick up or deliver goods at a building there, so the driver keeps to open streets until the turn for your block.

At I-405 and 182nd Street/Crenshaw Boulevard, the project SBCCOG celebrated as complete in November 2024 added auxiliary lanes along 1.2 miles, new ramps both ways and protected turn lanes; SBCCOG says the auxiliary lanes give drivers more time to merge, useful with a loaded truck. Billing is hourly: three hours minimum, four when an address is 30+ miles from the service area.

Rates, the Piano Line and the Minimum

A piano job in Torrance is billed like any household move with four movers: $209 an hour from Monday to Thursday and $225 an hour from Friday to Sunday, with the truck included. One line is added for the instrument, the $200 charge for piano moving with four movers that our moving rates page lists among specialty items.

The clock has a floor of three hours, raised to four when an address is 30 or more miles from the service area. Hours past the eighth are billed at one and a half times the rate. Fuel, equipment and stairs carry no separate fee, so steps between the street and the door count only through the minutes they take.

Upright or Grand, the Crew Stays at Four

The instrument doesn't change the crew or the charge: spinets, consoles, studio uprights, baby grands and grands all go with four movers and the same $200 line. What changes is the handling, since a grand usually travels with its legs and lyre removed, while an upright goes out in one piece. Three Measurements to Take Before Moving Day

On piano jobs, the doorway nobody measured is a more common hold-up than the piano itself. Take these three measurements the week before and pass them on when you book:

1. The narrowest opening. Measure the tightest door or hall turn between the piano and the street with the door fully open, and do the same at the new home if you can get in.
2. The steps. Count the steps from the curb to the entry and inside the home, and note any stair that turns at a landing.
3. The elevator, if there is one. Note the cab's inside depth and door width, and the time slot management has reserved for you.

The night before, clear the path: roll up rugs, move lamps and side tables aside, and take picture frames, plants and papers off the piano. Close the lid over the keys, and put the sheet music and anything kept in the bench into a box of their own.

One Truck for the Piano and the Household

When the piano moves with the rest of the home, it rides in the same truck on the same hours, and the $200 charge is the only addition for it. Moving Day, Curb to Room

The arrival window reaches you 24 to 48 hours before the move, and the crew phones about 30 minutes before the truck turns onto your street. On arrival, one mover walks the route from the piano to the curb with you while the others bring in blankets and wrap.

Door frames and railings along the path get padded, the piano is wrapped where it stands, and all four movers carry it out together. In the truck it is secured so it can't shift, and the driver keeps to streets open to trucks on the way over.

At the new home the order runs backwards: the path is checked, the piano comes in, any removed parts go back on, and the wrap comes off in the room. Before the crew leaves, walk around the piano with them and try the pedals and a few keys.
