Residential Moving in Palmdale for a City of Single-Family Homes

Residential Moving in Palmdale for a City of Single-Family Homes
Residential moving in Palmdale is mostly house moving: about four in five homes in the city are single-family, according to a housing profile by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). The job runs on the same model as our home moving service, a crew with a truck at an hourly rate, and Palmdale is part of the area we cover as movers across Los Angeles County.
What sets a Palmdale move apart is the street more than the furniture. The City doesn't issue parking permits, a heavy commercial truck can't park on a residential street except to load or unload, and sweeping closes the curb for posted hours twice a month. We work those details out when you book, not on the morning of the move.
Apartments are a smaller share of the city, and their managers may ask for paperwork before a truck pulls in. Both kinds of move use the same rates, and the sections below cover crew sizes, building rules and what changes when the new address is in another state.

What Palmdale Streets, Houses and Summers Mean for Moving Day
What Palmdale Streets, Houses and Summers Mean for Moving Day
Parking and permits: loading stops only
The City's commercial-truck page cites Municipal Code section 10.04.040: a commercial vehicle rated at 10,000 lb gross vehicle weight or more may not park on a street or alley in a residential zone at any time. Loading and unloading is a listed exception, so the truck arrives with the crew and leaves with it.
Streets are swept twice a month, on the first business day after scheduled trash pickup, and no one may park during the posted hours even after the sweeper passes. The City says it issues no parking permits of any kind, so if the move falls on your sweep day, we start after the posted window or pick another date.
HOA, condo and apartment rules: ask the manager
Apartment living is less common in Palmdale than across the region. SCAG's profile puts 12.0% of homes in buildings of five or more units, and renters made up 35.1% of households, against 47.5% region-wide. Any move rules a complex or HOA sets come from its manager, so we ask there before the date is locked rather than at the gate.
If a building wants a certificate of insurance, we issue one for $50 per building; two managed addresses mean two certificates. Everything else we confirm is in the checklist below.
Before moving in a Palmdale apartment complex or HOA community, confirm these for both addresses. One message to each manager usually covers them.
- Whether a certificate of insurance is required, and which names it must list.
- Allowed move days and hours, plus any elevator, loading-area or gate booking.
- Where a truck may stop inside the complex; on the street outside, heavy trucks may stand only while loading.
- The sweep day on each block, so loading doesn't fall inside posted no-parking hours.
- For a portable container: the driveway, outside the front-yard setback; in the street it needs an Encroachment Permit from the City's Engineering division.
- Stair turns, hallway corners and elevator depth, measured against your largest furniture.
Area notes: 1980s houses and newer tracts
The largest share of Palmdale's housing was built in 1980-1989 (32.6% in SCAG's profile), followed by the 1990s at 24.5% and 2000-2009 at 21.1%. After decades in one house, a garage can hold as much as a bedroom, so we count it when sizing the crew.
Newer homes need a different kind of care. Ritter Ranch, one of the City's specific plans, lies southwest of Elizabeth Lake Road and west of SR-14, and a 2025 state CEQA filing describes 553 single-family homes in its Phase 1A. The City's housing development page also lists 492 lots under construction between 20th and 25th Street West, south of Avenue P-8. In homes that new, floor runners and door-frame pads go down before the first box comes in.
Logistics and timing: SR-14 and the clock
From the Los Angeles side, the drive runs up SR-14, which Metro describes as the link between Los Angeles and the Antelope Valley. In April 2025 the City announced Caltrans work at the Palmdale Boulevard (SR-138) interchange, planned for 435 working days with daytime and overnight ramp closures, so we check current closures and detours before the truck leaves.
Hourly moves carry a 3-hour minimum, or 4 hours for addresses 30 or more miles from our service area, and the quote states which applies. July averages 98 degrees by the City's figures, so summer moves go best with an early start, and heat-sensitive items ride in your car.

Palmdale Home Moves: What People Ask Us
What to Settle Before Moving Day in Palmdale
What to Settle Before Moving Day in Palmdale
What Palmdale Home Moves Cost by the Hour
The price of a house or apartment move comes down to two numbers: how many movers you book and which day they work. Monday through Thursday, two movers with a truck cost $129 an hour, three cost $169 and four cost $209. Friday through Sunday the same crews run $145, $185 and $225, and each additional mover adds $40 an hour.
Blankets, stretch wrap, tape and furniture disassembly and reassembly are part of that rate, with no fuel surcharge, equipment fee or stair fee added. The charges that can be added are listed on our moving rates page: extra heavy items at $150, a glass tabletop crate at $75-$200, hoisting at $130 per item and an extra truck at $120 per day.
Hours are the part you can influence. Boxes packed and sealed before the crew arrives, beds stripped and a clear path from each room to the door keep the clock running on lifting instead of waiting. Anything beyond eight hours on the same day is billed at one and a half times the rate, so a very large house may be better split across two days.
Crew Size: Apartments, Family Houses and Pianos
Crew size follows the bedroom count. For a studio or one-bedroom, two or three movers are enough, and a house with three or more bedrooms gets four to six. The quote names the number, so nobody guesses on the morning of the move.
A piano changes the crew rather than the pricing model. It travels with four movers, billed at $209 an hour Monday through Thursday or $225 Friday through Sunday, plus a $200 piano charge, and our piano moving page explains how the crew handles the instrument. When it goes along with the rest of the house, it shares the same hours instead of being booked as a separate job.
Apartment and Condo Moves in Palmdale
A managed building adds fixed points to the day: the hours the manager allows, the entrance the truck uses, and stairs or an elevator between your door and the curb. We settle those with the checklist above, then decide which pieces come apart before they meet the first stair turn.
Walk-ups cost the same per hour as ground-floor units, since there's no stair fee, but they change the order of work. Dressers travel with drawers emptied or taped, bed frames and dining tables come apart in the room, and walls and door frames get padding before the first heavy piece goes by.
If you're trading Palmdale for an apartment in Burbank, our Burbank apartment moving page covers moves into buildings there. Rates and crew sizes stay the same from one end of the move to the other.
Packing, Protection and New-Construction Moves
You can pack the house yourself, hand the whole job to the crew, or have them pack only the fragile things, such as dishes, glassware and framed art. Unpacking at the new place is available as well, and the options are laid out on the packing and unpacking service page.
If you're packing yourself, boxes are sold one by one: $1.25 for a book box, $3.50 for a dish pack, and $4, $5 or $6 for small, medium and large boxes, with wardrobe boxes and extra blankets at $20-$25. Heavy things go in small boxes and light, bulky things in large ones, which keeps every carton liftable by one person.
New construction needs the most care. The City's list of new housing also includes 162 lots at 65th Street East and Avenue R and 105 lots at Elizabeth Lake Road and Joshua Ranch Road, and in a new build, fresh floors and paint mark easily. Tell us if the builder has rules for trucks on streets that are still being finished, and we'll plan around them.
Moving Out of State From Palmdale
A move that ends outside California isn't billed by the hour. It gets a binding estimate built from distance, weight and the services you choose, packing included if you want it, and our long-distance moving service covers all 50 states.
Heading south toward Los Angeles, the truck uses SR-14, a corridor Metro calls critical for commuters and freight. Metro and Caltrans are studying ramp upgrades, auxiliary lanes and interchange changes on its 36-mile stretch between Newhall Avenue in Santa Clarita and Avenue P, and the study is still in environmental review. For now the practical answer is timing: where the schedule allows, the loaded truck stays off the corridor at commute peaks.
